“Red Cap Girl” 16×20″ oil on linen panel – finished
May 10, 2010
Ah yes…..oil on Raymar linen panel 16×20″. I finshed with some impasto texture in places and some swatches of color in the background. This little lady was putting on her costume in preparation for her “Ballet Petite” ballet class that was ready to begin in any minute. I was fortunate to capture this special, unposed moment!

It’s important to work from the creative right brain and have some fun too!

My sweet daughter Braeden again, in the shade of the old building near the canal outside of Washing DC. The setting is back lit, late afternoon, soft light. I love the ancient window and sill, her scarf, and the cool light on her fair flesh tone. I also love the subtle gray tones and subdued color palette.
You can see the progress I’ve made. The bottom image was very early in the painting, and the top image has been refined after much work, and I still have more to do!

Inspired by my little ballet girls trying on costumes. I may decide to warm this painting up more. We’ll see.

This painting is inspired by my very special 17 year old daughter, Braeden. She graciously volunteered to model for me near an old building that may have been built around the time of the civil war. It’s located near the canal just outside of Washington DC. We set her up in late afternoon light on an antique bench in front of the old building. She is in very soft, natural, cool, sky light in the shade. However some direct sunlight did dapple the side of the building on the upper left corner of the painting. I love how the old paint was peeling off the bench.

I’m still progressing along with this painting. The last session I painted the finish layer on the little lady’s dress on the right. The paint layers throughout are still very fresh with no over working of any areas which is always nice. I do have a checklist in my mind for several future sessions on this work and I am really enjoying this “high key” painting.
